Ethiopia has officially confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in the southern part of the country, as reported by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) on Saturday. The Marburg virus, known for its high fatality rate and symptoms similar to Ebola, such as severe bleeding, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, has an incubation period of 21 days. Like Ebola, it is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, leading to a fatality rate ranging from 25 to 80 percent. The World Health Organization director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia, confirmed the detection of at least nine cases in southern Ethiopia on Friday, two days after Africa CDC was informed of a suspected haemorrhagic virus in the region.
