Indonesia U-23 Defeated by Mali 3-0 in Friendly Match, Here’s what Erick Thohir said

The Indonesian U-23 national team was defeated 3-0 when testing Mali U-23 strength in preparation for the 2025 SEA Games. In response to the result, PSSI Chairman, Erick Thohir, stated, “Yes, indeed this is U-23’s preparation for the SEA Games. We can see that Mali is ranked in the 50s. When we watched last night, some of them were from MU-U21, yes, their class is above us,” said Erick to reporters in Borobudur Temple, Magelang Regency, on Sunday (16/11/2025).

“But, the most important thing is whether we can achieve our target of silver or even gold at the SEA Games. We will see; we will try to push for it,” continued Erick, who is also the Minister of Youth and Sports.

He expressed gratitude that players from various leagues have joined the national team. “Thank God, many of our players from leagues have started training. Even Diaspora players have also started to commit to joining. But, we will strive for cohesion. I believe Coach Indra Sjafri will be given the opportunity,” he added.

“The plan is for Marcelino to join later. I think that’s it. As for others, if there are other names like Adrian Wibowo who can join, it would be great. The one from LAFC, I think he is good,” Erick further stated.

According to detikSepakbola, the Indonesian U-23 national team tested Mali U-23’s strength in preparation for the 2025 SEA Games on Sunday (15/11). Ivar Jenner and his team were defeated with a heavy score of 3-0.

The Indonesia vs. Mali match took place at the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, Bogor Regency. Garuda Muda succumbed with a 0-3 score.

Mali took the lead 1-0 within five minutes of the match. Sekou Doucoure scored with a header from a corner kick.

Mali delivered a heavy blow to Indonesia. In the 34th minute, Wilson Samake ran from the side of the field into the penalty area to score. Mali led 2-0.

Indonesia almost scored towards the end of the first half. Dony Tri Pamungkas entered the penalty area from the left side and took a shot, but the ball was saved by Bourama Kone.

Indonesia struggled to create chances in the second half. Indra Sjafri’s team found it difficult to launch attacks.

Indonesia’s gameplay did not improve during the second half. Mali posed more threats through wing play.

Instead of finding a goal, Indonesia conceded again in injury time. Moulaye Haidara scored, making Indonesia lose 0-3.
