India Lost Against South Africa 1st Test: South Africa took the lead against India with a 30-run victory in the 1st test match held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The Indian team struggled to chase down the target set by South Africa, managing only 93 runs in their second innings. The match concluded on the third day with spinner Simon Harmer playing a crucial role, taking a total of 8 wickets in both Indian innings. The second test match is scheduled to be held in Guwahati from November 22. Rishabh Pant’s comments following the match and Gautam Gambhir’s reaction shed light on the team’s performance.

Rishabh Pant reflected on the match, saying, ‘Overthinking a simple game like this doesn’t help. We could have easily crossed this score. But the pressure mounted on us in the second innings. Temba and Bavuma played exceptionally well, putting us back under pressure.’ Looking ahead, Pant mentioned, ‘Support on the wicket helps; sometimes a score of 120 can become difficult. But as a team, we should have handled the pressure better to benefit from the situation. We haven’t yet thought about what needs to improve; the match has just ended. We will come back stronger next time.’

Coach Gautam Gambhir’s frustration was evident due to the disappointing performance of the Indian team. He expressed, ‘We needed a change in approach… but we didn’t execute it properly, and that’s what happened. To comfortably chase 124 runs in a Test match should have been achievable.’ Following Quinton de Kock’s impressive performance, Temba Bavuma decided to enforce the follow-on. South Africa had scored 159 runs in their first innings, with Jasprit Bumrah taking five wickets for India. However, the Indian team could only manage to score 189 runs in their first innings, falling short by 30 runs.

In the second innings, South Africa’s position deteriorated, and India bowled them out for 153 runs. Consequently, India had a simple target of 124 runs, but unexpectedly faced a tough challenge. As the current series stands, South Africa has taken a lead of 1-0 in the matches. The second test match will be held in Guwahati starting from November 22.
