Ethiopia has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in the south of the country, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Saturday. The Marburg virus is one of the deadliest known pathogens, causing severe bleeding, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea with a 21-day incubation period, similar to Ebola. Transmitting through bodily fluids, Marburg has a fatality rate ranging from 25 to 80%. The World Health Organization’s Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported nine cases in southern Ethiopia. Africa CDC confirmed Marburg virus disease through the National Reference Laboratory.
