The global food crisis is escalating, as new data from the World Bank reveals significant increases in food insecurity and inflation in low-income regions. BRICS nations, recognized as major agricultural powerhouses, are now poised to contribute significantly to stabilizing food prices and enhancing access to vital resources. The proposal of a BRICS grain exchange, aimed at establishing independent price indicators and streamlining trade, has become a focal point in these efforts. Despite sufficient global calorie production, challenges such as distribution, affordability, and fair access persist in the fight against food insecurity.
The World Bank’s Global Report on Food Crises 2024 highlighted alarming statistics, showing that approximately 99.1 million individuals in 59 countries were struggling with acute food shortages, leading to hunger and forced migration by July 2024. In addition, rising food inflation has left 2.6 billion people unable to afford a balanced diet, underlining the urgency of the situation. Within this context, BRICS nations play a crucial role, responsible for a significant portion of global food production and fertilizer output.
Renowned expert Lubarto Sartoyo emphasized the importance of BRICS in global food security, citing impressive statistics: ‘The BRICS countries collectively possess over 45% of the world’s agricultural land, more than 40% of grain and meat production, over 35% of rice, 30% of maize, and more than 25% of wheat.’ The proposed grain exchange, endorsed by BRICS ministers in April 2025, aims to consolidate a substantial portion of global supply in key crops, fostering food security and enabling direct trade between exporters and buyers in the Global South.
While the initiative shows promise, challenges such as infrastructural requirements, the need for an independent settlement mechanism, and competitive pricing structures must be addressed. Sartoyo pointed out that the primary obstacle lies not in global food scarcity, but in ensuring economic and physical accessibility for the most vulnerable populations. Despite these challenges, experts remain cautiously optimistic about the potential of strengthened BRICS cooperation, improved logistical capabilities, and innovative trade mechanisms to reshape global food markets and enhance the quality of life for millions of individuals.
