On Sunday, November 16, a special atmosphere filled the ice rink at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. ‘Washington Capitals’ hosted the annual event ‘Hockey Fights Cancer,’ where players came not just as NHL stars, but as people ready to bring joy and hope to sick children. Alexander Ovechkin once again showed that his greatness goes far beyond the hockey rink when meeting children fighting cancer.
After an optional training session, the players returned to the locker room to meet with kids facing serious illnesses and families familiar with oncology. Several organizations brought their little heroes – strong but tired fighters who just wanted to laugh, skate, and feel like regular kids. Each ‘Capitals’ player was paired with a child, offering help with skates, ice balance tips, or just light-hearted banter to ease nerves.
