Controversy in Ranji Trophy 2025: Batsman Given Out for ‘Hit The Ball Twice’ Rule

In the Ranji Trophy 2025, a controversial incident occurred where a Manipur batsman was given out for ‘Hit the Ball Twice.’ The entire situation arose when Manipur’s batsman Laamabam Singh defended the ball with his bat twice during a plate group Ranji match. After defending the ball, he started moving towards the stumps, at which point the on-field umpire signaled him out. The spectators present then appealed for the dismissal, following which even the fielding team lodged a complaint. The decisions were made as per the rules set by the Mumbai Cricket Club (MCC). According to rule 34.1.1, if a batsman deliberately hits the ball twice with the bat or body, excluding his hand, he is deemed out. However, if a batsman accidentally touches the ball twice with the bat, he is not given out.
