Lula nominates Jorge Messias for the Supreme Court

President Lula (PT) called Attorney-General of the Union Jorge Messias for a meeting on Thursday morning (20) at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília and nominated him for the position on the Supreme Court (STF). The nomination has already been signed by the president. On Monday night (17), Lula met with Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) for a conversation at the Planalto Palace. At the time, the president made it clear to Pacheco that he would not be the nominee for the STF and that Messias was his choice for the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso, who recently retired. According to sources with access to the president and Pacheco, Lula mentioned that he needed the senator in Minas Gerais as a gubernatorial candidate in 2026. The president also stated that being a governor is much more than being a minister in the STF, and due to his political experience, Pacheco would gather all the necessary conditions to emerge victorious in a campaign.
