Russian Chief of General Staff declares control over Kupyansk

The ‘West’ troops group has taken control of the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region, announced Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov. ‘The units of the ‘West’ troops group liberated the city of Kupyansk and continue to destroy the formations of the Ukrainian armed forces surrounded on the left bank of the Oskol River,’ Gerasimov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Commander of the ‘West’ troops group Sergey Kuzovlev stated that after Kupyansk came under Russian control, there were still scattered groups of Ukrainian soldiers within the city. ‘The city is under our control, and separate scattered enemy groups are being eliminated,’ Kuzovlev informed Putin.

‘The city was a key defense point for the enemy and an important logistical center of the Ukrainian armed forces in this area,’ noted the commander. He also mentioned that Russian military forces prevented the breakthrough of Ukrainian troops from the encirclement in Kupyansk. ‘The enemy repeatedly attempted to unblock the surrounded group, restore crossings over the Oskol River, and try to break out of the encirclement. All counterattacks were repelled, and the breakthrough of Ukrainian formations from the encirclement was prevented,’ the commander reported.

Kupyansk is a city in the Kharkiv region, housing a major railway junction. It is located 116 kilometers from Kharkiv on both banks of the Oskol River.
