South Korean President Lee Attends G20 Summit in Johannesburg

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung concluded his official visit to Egypt and headed to South Africa on Friday to take part in the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Johannesburg. The summit will address global issues such as inclusive growth and climate change. While in Cairo, Lee engaged in summit discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on enhancing cooperation in peace initiatives and the defense industry. He also presented his plan for increased involvement in the Middle East, emphasizing regional peace, economic partnerships, and cultural exchanges.

Lee’s agenda in Johannesburg includes a three-day visit for the G20 summit, themed ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’ and scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac mentioned that Lee will showcase South Korea’s economic and climate policies and commit to a more active international role during the summit. Being the first G20 summit in Africa, Lee aims to highlight Seoul’s dedication to expanding collaboration with the continent, fostering unity, and supporting its growth.

Apart from summit activities, Lee will engage in bilateral and multilateral meetings with leaders from MIKTA and hold discussions with France and Germany to strengthen ties. Wi emphasized Lee’s role in enhancing Korea’s global responsibility status and working towards a conducive environment for revitalizing the multilateral trade system. Following the South Africa visit, Lee will travel to Turkey as the final destination in his Middle East and Africa tour that previously included the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
