Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, has requested its chief to step down after inviting a US scholar who supports Israel to an internal event in August. The group’s leadership has given Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf three days to resign or face removal from his position, citing his invitation to a person associated with an international Zionism network. Mr. Staquf, NU’s chairman since 2021, has not yet responded to the request for comment. On Nov 23, he stated that he was appointed for a five-year term and would not resign, claiming the meeting organizers had no authority to remove him.
