Informed sources have indicated that significant progress has been made on the issue of Hamas’s weapons during intensive meetings in Cairo between the movement’s leadership and officials from Egypt’s General Intelligence Directorate, as reported by Russia’s RT channel. The Palestinian delegation, led by Mohammed Darwish, Khalil al-Hayya, Nizar Awadallah, and Zaher Jabarin, is working towards finding a transitional administrative arrangement for Gaza. The focus of the discussions is on establishing a technocratic committee as a step towards comprehensive Palestinian national reconciliation.
The meetings aim to set a framework for governing Gaza in the politically and operationally complex upcoming period. This is in preparation for the second phase of negotiations under the “Sharm el-Sheikh–Trump” agreement, aiming to achieve a long-term ceasefire. The talks have concentrated on finalizing the formation of a technocratic committee to oversee the Strip temporarily, paving the way for broader reconciliation. Progress is being made on the issue of “resistance weapons,” particularly the retention of personal firearms.
Hamas has urged an end to Israeli escalation, citing 497 ceasefire agreement violations that have caused over 342 Palestinian deaths. At the same time, a high-level United States delegation has been in discussions with Egyptian security officials on implementing the second phase of the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement. This includes exploring options for a long-term ceasefire and stabilizing security, possibly involving an Egyptian role within an international force.
Cairo has been hosting crucial meetings since Sunday, with a Hamas delegation meeting Major General Hassan Rashad, head of Egyptian General Intelligence. Separate talks have also been held with Palestinian factions like Islamic Jihad, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Democratic Front, Popular Resistance Committees, and Palestinian National Initiative.
