Volcanic Ash Alert: Impact of Ethiopia Eruption on Delhi’s Air Quality

Delhi received a concerning air quality alert as volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi eruption reached the city on Monday night. The ash cloud, carrying fine particles and sulphur dioxide, traveled over 3,000 km at a speed of nearly 130 kmph, entering India’s northwest skies at around 11 pm. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, dormant for thousands of years, erupted on Sunday, spewing ash and gas up to 14 km high. As satellite models monitored the plume’s movement towards India, worries grew in Delhi, where pollution levels are already severe.
