‘This policy aligns with the mandate of the Constitution, which aims to protect all Indonesians and make Indonesia a just and civilized nation,’ affirmed the animal rights group Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) in a statement on Tuesday. Indonesia is one of the few countries that still allows the sale of dog and cat meat, but a campaign against this practice is gaining traction. Several cities, like Semarang in central Java, have imposed local bans on this trade in recent years. Dog meat, a cheap source of protein, is also consumed in various other Asian countries.
