During the fourth day of the second Test match in Guwahati, South Africa declared their second innings at 260 runs and set a target of 549 runs for team India. After the day’s play concluded, Conrad was asked in a press conference why he delayed declaring the innings. He responded with controversial remarks, expressing his intention to tire out the Indian team and make them grovel, using the English word ‘grovel.’ This choice of word sparked debate due to its historical context from the 1976 West Indies tour to England, where it stirred controversy.
The usage of the word ‘grovel’ by the South African coach led to the root of the controversy as it carried the same meaning Tony Greig used for the West Indies team during their tour back in 1976. This statement had caused a significant debate at that time. Nearly fifty years later, the use of this word has sparked a debate in cricket, with Conrad now facing criticism and challenges from various individuals.
Responding to the controversy, Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble advised humility rather than arrogance to the South African coach ahead of the fifth day’s play. He emphasized the historical significance attached to the word and the importance of humility, especially when in a position of leadership. On the other hand, former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn expressed dissatisfaction with the coach’s remarks, stating his disagreement openly on a sports show.
