Bombay High Court Criticizes Maharashtra Govt for Blaming Volcanic Ash from Ethiopia for Poor Air Quality in Mumbai

Volcanic ash from Ethiopia has caused some parts of India to be affected by air pollution. Mumbai is also experiencing the consequences of it. Due to this, the air quality and visibility in Mumbai and surrounding areas have suddenly deteriorated over the past two days, as government lawyer Jyoti Chavan tried to inform the court. At that time, do not blame this reason. It was pointed out by the court that for several days, all particulate matter up to 500 meters had been visible.

Previously, senior lawyers Darayas Khambata and Janak Dwarkadas had raised the issue of increasing air pollution in Mumbai in front of the Chief Justice-led bench of the High Court. They emphasized the need to quickly plan effective measures to improve the situation, which deteriorates day by day.

In October 2023, the court had filed a petition regarding air pollution in Mumbai. Since then, the petition has been pending and the court has issued orders from time to time to improve the air pollution situation in Mumbai. However, no hearings have been held on this matter since April, and even after the previous orders, the municipality has not submitted reports on proposed measures, which was also pointed out by Khambata.

Various proposed measures had been submitted to the municipal administration for air pollution control. Expecting reports from the municipality to be submitted by June 12, Dwarkadas informed the court that reports had not yet been received. With all these inputs, the court linked the deteriorating air pollution situation in Delhi to the construction carried out there.

Recommend Effective Solutions
What effective measures have been taken to address the air pollution problem caused by volcanic ash in Delhi is well known to all. Therefore, what effective measures can be taken to resolve this problem day by day? What are the most effective measures that can be taken daily to control the situation? The Supreme Court posed these questions, as well as issued an order on Friday asking the state government, municipality, and MPCB to clarify their roles.

‘Stop Work’ Notices to 53 Construction Sites
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has issued ‘Stop Work’ notices to 53 construction sites considered to be causing air pollution. These include development projects, government projects, bakeries, marble cutting industries, among various other industries. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board will be informed about projects causing air pollution due to RMCI plants.
