Catastrophe strikes Asia as floods and landslides ravage Indonesia and Sri Lanka, leaving hundreds dead and missing. The death toll from the floods and landslides that swept through Indonesia has risen to over 200. Ilham Wahab, a spokesperson for the West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, reported that 90 people remain missing. ‘So far, 61 victims have been recorded, and we are looking for another 90 people,’ he said, referring to the western area of Sumatra.
In North Sumatra, another 116 people have died, while in Aceh province, the death toll stands at at least 35, according to the agency’s data. In Sri Lanka, at least 123 people have lost their lives, with 44,000 displaced due to the floods and landslides caused by torrential rains. The Disaster Management Centre (Dmc) announced that 130 people remain missing. Director General Sampath Kotuwegoda informed the press in Colombo that rescue operations are ongoing due to Cyclone Ditwah passing nearby and heading towards India.
The Sri Lankan government has deployed the army to support rescue efforts. Dmc officials have stated they expect flood levels to surpass those recorded in 2016 when 71 people died from floods on the island. ‘We stand ready to provide further help and assistance as the situation evolves,’ wrote Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, after India sent a plane loaded with food for flood-affected individuals in Sri Lanka.
