At least 248 people have been reported dead in Indonesia after monsoon rains and an earthquake caused flooding and landslides. In West Sumatra alone, 74 bodies were found as rescuers worked to retrieve them from homes submerged under mud and rocks, as stated by the country’s disaster management agency. More than 500 individuals sustained injuries, and rescuers are still in the process of looking for survivors who may be trapped under debris caused by the landslides. Due to heavy rain, hundreds of police, soldiers, and residents had to use their bare hands and shovels to dig through the debris hindering rescue efforts.
