Satellites Capture Stunning Images of Ethiopian Volcano’s First Eruption in Recorded History

The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Northern Ethiopia erupted on Sunday (Nov. 23) for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, causing chaos in nearby villages. Satellite imagery showed massive plumes of pale ash spreading across the arid region. Prior to this eruption, the volcano’s last known activity dates back to the beginning of the Holocene Epoch, marking the end of the last ice age after 2.6 million years. Although no casualties were reported as a result of the eruption, villages in the remote Afdera district were coated in ash, affecting both residences and livestock, according to AP.
