Cyber scams can spin out of control, targeting unsuspecting individuals. In one case, a doctor fell prey to a scam on Facebook, losing a staggering Rs 14 crore. If you receive a friendship request on Facebook, be cautious. Cyber criminals are creating fake profiles to lure victims. The doctor, based in Hyderabad’s Habsiguda, was approached by a person named ‘Monika’ on Facebook. Little did he know, it was the beginning of a honey trap, leading to one of the biggest cyber frauds in Telangana’s history.
The scam unfolded between September 26 and November 26, lasting approximately 60 days. ‘Monika’ turned out to be a fake profile created by cyber criminals. Despite engaging in conversations and trading screenshots of alleged trading profits, the doctor realized the truth too late. He reported the incident to the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau and a complaint was filed. Police swiftly initiated an investigation, uncovering multiple bogus accounts linked to the scam.
Authorities managed to freeze around Rs 1.20 crore of the funds, with the remaining amount diverted to various bank accounts and digital wallets. Inter-state cyber links are being probed in this nationwide scam alert. The public is urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the helpline. The doctor, who unknowingly participated in the scam due to mental pressure, is now seeking assistance to recover the lost funds.
The impact of this social media scam has raised concerns about cyber crimes in Hyderabad. Reportedly, losses totaling Rs 385 crore have been recorded in 2025 alone. The police have intensified efforts to make more arrests and prevent further financial frauds. Stay informed and stay safe in the digital age.
