The death toll from floods and landslides in Indonesia’s Sumatra Island has climbed to 303, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency. A tropical storm in the Malacca Strait triggered a week of cyclone-fueled heavy rain in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. At least 279 people remain missing, while around 80,000 have been evacuated and hundreds are still stranded in Sumatra. Rescue efforts, including aid deliveries via helicopters, are ongoing in the hardest-hit northern part of the island, where landslides blocked roads and destroyed communication infrastructure.
