Indonesia’s cinema market is currently facing significant volatility, as highlighted by industry experts at the JAFF Market panel ‘Expert Witnesses: Indonesia’s Box Office Transformation as Seen From Home and Abroad.’ Filmmaker and founder of Visinema, Angga Dwimas Sasongko, shared insights into the market’s fluctuations, citing the success of the animated feature ‘Jumbo’ produced by his company, which became the country’s highest-grossing film. However, Sasongko noted that ticket sales have dropped below 3 million in some months, emphasizing the need for sustainable growth strategies. Visinema’s approach of counter-programming has been successful in delivering results by offering unique content that stands out. Sasongko highlighted the importance of industry restructuring and proposed limiting annual film releases to 160 to combat oversaturation.
