Three years after the Tigray war, Ethiopia is facing a violent armed insurgency in its north-west. The Fano, an ethno-nationalist militia comprising former soldiers mainly from the Ethiopian regional special forces, now control significant areas in the Amhara region. Abuses by federal forces trying to suppress the insurgency include kidnappings, massacres, sexual violence, and attacks on humanitarian personnel. The situation is dire, with over 2 million people urgently needing humanitarian aid in a region also hosting refugees from the Sudanese conflict.
