New HIV Cases Spike in Mizoram While National Infections Decline

New HIV infections per 1,000 uninfected population, or annual new HIV incidence rate, were at 0.05 nationally in 2024. Mizoram reported the highest estimated new HIV incidence at 0.90, followed by Nagaland (0.42) and Tripura (0.28), as per the India HIV estimate 2025 technical report. Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya also had incidence rates of 0.20 or higher. Nationally, new cases decreased by 48.70% between 2010 and 2024, with notable increases in Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. Globally, new infections dropped by 40% from 2010 to 2024.
