During the JAFF Market, creators from Indonesia, Malaysia, and South Korea discussed the rapid growth of Asian animation. Breakout successes such as Visinema’s ‘Jumbo,’ Malaysia’s teen-focused storytelling, and Korea’s global ambitions were highlighted as key drivers of this new wave. Panelists emphasized the need for scale, investment, and improved distribution pipelines to meet the increasing demand for high-quality animation in the region.
In Malaysia, marketing firms have played a crucial role in the expansion of narratives in animation. From neighborhood stories like ‘Upin & Ipin’ to more complex themes in ‘Boboi Boy’ and ‘Ejen Ali,’ Malaysian animation now caters to a broader audience, including viewers aged 13 and up. Ahmad Izham Omar, from Komet Production, praised the upcoming series ‘Kisah Bawah Tanah’ for offering fresh and mature content.
Visinema’s success with ‘Jumbo’ has put Indonesia on the animation map, despite being a newcomer in the industry. Chief content officer Anggia Kharisma expressed the challenges of sustainability and the importance of creating meaningful stories for children. With the production team consisting of over 420 individuals, ‘Jumbo’ has set a new standard for Indonesian animation.
Kharisma highlighted the scattered nature of digital content in Indonesia and the need for curated, inspiring material. She emphasized the importance of connecting with stories that matter to create a positive impact on young audiences. ‘Jumbo’ took seven years to develop, showcasing the dedication required to produce quality content in the industry.
South Korea’s animation sector, represented by Finecut CEO Suh Young-joo, showcased the ambitious production ‘Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves,’ with a budget exceeding $20 million. Korean animators are facing challenges in catering to diverse audiences while staying competitive in the global market. Understanding global trends is key to success in both domestic and international markets.
The vibrant animation scenes in Vietnam, Malaysia, and South Korea are paving the way for a new era in Asian animation. With a focus on compelling storytelling, cultural relevance, and technical excellence, these countries are set to make a significant impact on the global animation landscape.
