More Than 1,300 Dead from Floods in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand

Emergency crews are rushing to reach survivors as the death toll from last week’s floods and landslides exceeded 1,300 in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Days of intense monsoon rains flooded large areas, leaving countless people stranded, some clinging to rooftops and trees awaiting rescue. The flooding and landslides claimed at least 1,303 lives, with Indonesia reporting 712 dead, Sri Lanka 410, and Thailand 181. Sri Lanka’s President said it’s too early to ascertain the exact number of casualties.

In Indonesia, rescuers are facing challenges accessing villages on Sumatra island due to washed-out roads and collapsed bridges. More than 500 people are still missing, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Helicopters and boats are being used in rescue operations, but worsening weather and damaged infrastructure are slowing progress.

In North Sumatra, floods and landslides swept away millions of cubic meters of timber, raising concerns about illegal logging’s role in the disaster. A lush forest area turned into a wasteland of broken logs and ruined homes. Activists point to deforestation and uncontrolled development as factors that have stripped the region of its resilience. Urgent restoration and stricter protections are needed.

A week after the floods in West Sumatra, survivors are desperately seeking news of missing loved ones. Zahari Sutra, a farmer, holds photos of his vanished wife and daughters, aged four and two, as he pleads for help. Military-led rescue teams in Sri Lanka are searching for 336 missing people after Cyclone Ditwah. Authorities warn of worsening conditions with more rain forecasted.

President Dissanayake described the disaster as the worst in recent history, with the death toll likely higher than reported. In Thailand, cleanup is underway after floods affected over 1.5 million households and almost 4 million people. Efforts are focused on restoring infrastructure, including water and electricity. Public kitchens will provide food to affected residents, with compensation payments for thousands underway.
