International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is celebrated every December 3rd, this year falling on a Wednesday (12/3/2025). Who are the disabled figures who have inspired the world with their achievements and contributions? From Indonesia to abroad, they have shown that limitations are not obstacles to creating. Here is the complete list! Angkie Yudistia, born in Medan on June 5, 1987, became deaf at the age of 10. Despite facing challenges in education, she went on to achieve various accolades, such as being a finalist in Abang None Jakarta 2008 and winning The Most Fearless Female Cosmopolitan 2008. In 2011, she founded Thisable Enterprise, a social enterprise empowering disabled individuals in Indonesia. M Ade Irawan, born in England on January 15, 1994, is known as a talented pianist despite being visually impaired. He performed at the Chicago Winter Jazz Festival and Java Jazz Festival 2010, and has been dubbed as the ‘Indonesian version of Stevie Wonder’. Namira Zania Siregar, the first model with Down syndrome at Jakarta Fashion Week 2018, represented Indonesia at the ASEAN Youth Festival 2018 and Extraordinary Celebration 2019, proving that physical disabilities are not barriers to achievement. Nina Gusmita, who lost one of her legs in an accident at the age of 18, remained determined to engage in sports. At the XVI Peparnas Papua 2021, she set a national record by winning three gold medals in wheelchair athletics. Panji Surya Sahetapy, born on December 21, 1993, is a Deaf individual who has achieved success both nationally and internationally, participating in conferences at the United Nations and NASA. Graduating with honors from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Surya is actively involved in teaching sign language in various cities. These inspirational disabled figures from Indonesia showcase the power of perseverance and determination, inspiring others globally. Moving on to international disabled figures, Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at 21, a condition that progressively limited his movements and initially gave him a life expectancy of two years. Despite being confined to a wheelchair and only able to move his head and eyes, Hawking lived until the age of 76, becoming one of the most brilliant physicists and receiving numerous international awards for his contributions to science. Nick Vujicic, born with Tetra-Amelia Syndrome, which resulted in him having no arms or legs, faced challenges, discrimination, and bullying in his early years, nearly giving up. However, Nick discovered his potential and became a global motivational speaker. He founded the organization Life Without Limbs, authored books, and shared his inspirational story worldwide. Stevie Wonder, born premature and losing his vision due to excess oxygen in an incubator, has remained a music genius despite being blind from birth. Known for his timeless songs, Stevie Wonder’s trademark sunglasses always accompany him on stage, solidifying his status as a world music legend. Helen Keller, deaf and blind since childhood, managed to earn a cum laude bachelor’s degree from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Her life story was portrayed in the drama and film ‘The Miracle Worker’, which narrates how her teacher, Anne Sullivan, helped her grasp language. Throughout her life, Helen authored 12 books, including an autobiography, and was actively involved in politics and education. Marlee Matlin, experiencing hearing impairment from 18 months due to genetic cochlear abnormalities, defied odds to become a successful actress. Matlin received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film ‘Children of a Lesser God’, proving that the film industry can be inclusive. These five figures demonstrate that disabilities are not impediments to creativity and inspiration, impacting people worldwide.
