Bacellar served as Secretary of State in the Rio de Janeiro government and is currently a state deputy. In the 2018 elections, he ran for state deputy for the Solidarity party and was elected with 26,135 votes. Rodrigo Bacellar was reelected in 2022 for the PL party, receiving 97,822 votes, and is now serving his second term in the ALERJ. In 2025, he was reelected President of Alerj unanimously.
