Ten Years in Sweden

Sanaz fled from Iran at the age of 16 and sought asylum in Sweden. Her main goal was to find freedom and live as a human being. “I wanted to make decisions for myself,” she says. Unfortunately, after a decade in the country, she hasn’t been able to form any meaningful friendships with Swedes. She expresses her disappointment at this lack of connection.

Sanaz believes that maybe it was difficult for Swedes to approach her because she was once young and vulnerable. She has yearned for genuine friendships, but the cultural differences have posed challenges. Despite her efforts, the language barrier and social norms have made it hard for her to integrate and build relationships.

Sanaz expresses her frustration at feeling like an outsider in a country where she has lived for so long. She remains grateful for the safety and security Sweden has provided her, but the lack of social connections weighs heavily on her. She reflects on her journey and the difficulties of trying to navigate a new culture and society as an asylum seeker.

Having spent a significant portion of her life in Sweden, Sanaz continues to grapple with feelings of isolation and loneliness. She emphasizes the importance of friendship and human connection, especially in a foreign land. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful that one day she will be able to form meaningful bonds with Swedes and feel truly at home in her adopted country.
