Throughout the history of the SEA Games, the competition among Southeast Asian countries has not only been about prestige but also about dominating the gold medal count. Who holds the record for the most gold medals in SEA Games history? And where does Indonesia stand in the list of countries with the most gold medals in SEA Games history? The 33rd SEA Games will take place in Thailand as the host country from December 9-20, 2025. Before supporting Indonesian athletes, let’s first delve into the history of the SEA Games and the record for the most gold medals in this prestigious event in Southeast Asia.
The Southeast Asian Games, known as SEA Games, is a sports event held every two years involving 11 ASEAN member countries. Founded in 1958 as SEAP Games, with founding members including Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam Republic, the event aimed to promote cooperation and strengthen relationships among Southeast Asian countries. The first SEAP Games were held in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1959, with over 527 athletes from six member countries participating. In 1975, during the 8th SEAP Games, South Vietnam collapsed, leading to geopolitical shifts which eventually saw Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines considering joining as members. In 1997, the event officially changed its name to SEA Games, reflecting its expanded membership beyond the Southeast Asian Peninsula.
SEA Games has been a prestigious stage for Southeast Asian athletes to showcase their abilities. Through its history, some athletes have achieved remarkable success by collecting numerous gold medals. One standout athlete is Joscelin Yeo from Singapore, a legendary swimmer who amassed an impressive 40 gold medals, 12 silver, and 3 bronze from 1991 to 2005. Indonesia also boasts top performers in SEA Games history, with archer Donald Pandiangan winning 23 gold medals between 1977-1987, and swimmer Richard Sam Bera garnering 22 gold medals from 1987-2007. With nine of the top gold medalists being swimmers, the sport has provided ample opportunities for athletes to excel in various distances and events.
Mentioned in the top 10 gold medalists in SEA Games history are Patricia Chan with 39 gold medals, Quah Ting Wen with 34 gold medals, and Quah Zheng Wen with 32 gold medals, all representing Singapore. Joseph Schooling and Tao Li, also from Singapore, achieved 29 gold medals each. Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Anh Vien earned 25 gold medals. As Indonesia gears up for SEA Games 2025, the Ministry of Youth and Sports targets 80 gold medals, sending 996 athletes to compete across different sports. With this large contingent, Indonesia aims to showcase its athletic prowess and elevate national sports during the upcoming games.
