Floods in Southeast Asia: Over 1,600 Dead

The death toll has risen to 276 in Thailand, where authorities estimate that 4 million people have been affected by the severe weather. At least 1,608 people have died in the ongoing floods hitting Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with the situation expected to worsen on Friday due to the forecast of heavy rains. The total number of deaths has increased to 276 in Thailand, with countless streets remaining flooded in seven southern provinces. Although the government does not disclose the total number of missing persons, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) stated on Thursday that 367 people were reported missing in the country. In Indonesia, the most affected country in South and Southeast Asia by the convergence of cyclones, the death toll has risen to 862 today, with 571 missing, nearly 2.7 thousand injured, and around 3.5 million people affected. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that 3.3 million people were affected by Cyclone Senyar, which brought torrential rains, landslides, and floods. Aceh province has the highest number of deaths, followed by North Sumatra and West Sumatra. At least 1.1 million people have been displaced from their homes and almost 10,000 houses have been damaged. Search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas, involving the Army, as well as volunteers and emergency teams, who face significant challenges in carrying out their work.
