G7 and EU to Consider Total Ban on Maritime Transport of Russian Oil

Countries from the ‘Group of Seven’ and the European Union are reportedly discussing implementing a ban on the use of Western tankers and maritime services for transporting Russian oil, according to Reuters on December 5, 2025, citing their sources. Under the plan, shipments of Russian crude on vessels owned or insured in G7 and EU countries would be prohibited. Sources suggest that currently, a fleet under Greek, Cypriot, and Maltese flags is likely used to transport oil to India and China. The ban is expected to be included in the next round of EU sanctions against Russia, planned for early 2026. The EU reportedly aims to coordinate this measure with a broader G7 alliance before presenting it for a vote.
