CBSA seizes 200 kg of opium smuggled in machinery in Metro Vancouver

Border officials in Metro Vancouver seized 209 kilograms of opium hidden in a shipping container originating from the United Arab Emirates. The Canada Border Services Agency reported that the opium was found on March 26 inside an 11,000-kilogram piece of commercial machinery at the Burnaby container examination facility. A video released by CBSA revealed a welder cutting through the machinery to uncover several packages of opium. This haul accounted for almost half of the 448 kilograms of opioids, including opium, methadone, and morphine, seized by border officials in Canada last fiscal year. The discovery highlights the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling across borders.
