Gurmeet Chadha praises Russian Sberbank’s MF entry into Indian equities as a global expansion model

Sberbank’s introduction of a Nifty 50-linked mutual fund offers Russian investors direct exposure to Indian equities, expanding global capital inflows and potentially leading to partnerships with other regions like BRICS. Market expert Gurmeet Chadha, Managing Partner and CIO of Complete Circle Consultants, expressed appreciation for Sberbank’s decision to invest in Indian stocks via mutual funds, highlighting the benchmarking to Nifty 50. This move now enables Russian investors to participate in the Indian stock market. Chadha emphasized the significance, stating, ‘Russia’s largest Bank SBER offering Nifty50 index to local Russians is BIG. Russia has significant Rupee surplus.’ Chadha also mentioned that this initiative could serve as a template for collaborations with other countries and regions, allowing access to foreign retail investors and unlocking global capital. The NSE-launched fund, ‘First-India,’ in partnership with Sberbank and JSC First Asset Management, offers Russian retail investors exposure to the Nifty 50 index, providing a direct link to India’s stock market. The launch, announced by Sberbank’s CEO Herman Gref during his business visit to India, marks a significant step in enhancing financial cooperation between India and Russia. The Nifty50 index, comprising 50 large-cap stocks listed on the NSE, is a widely followed indicator globally. As the index completes 30 years in 2026, Sberbank’s move opens up new investment opportunities for Russian clients in South Asia, as reflected by Gref’s statement: ‘Our new product provides a convenient way to gain exposure to one of the world’s key economic markets-the Indian stock market.’ NSE’s MD & CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan hailed the initiative as a testament to the confidence in India’s markets and the growth in India-Russia financial cooperation, pledging continued collaboration to enhance market connectivity and transparency.
