Jakarta, Dec. 7: Indonesian troops launched an invasion of Portuguese East Timor and, with the support of pro-Indonesian forces, took control of the war-torn capital city of Dili. The Indonesian Foreign Minister, Dr. Adam Malik, stated that around 1,000 Indonesian troops landed in Dili today at the request of pro-Indonesian forces, aiming to ‘prevent bloodshed.’ Australian reports indicated that leaders and members of the Revolutionary Front for East Timor (Fretilin) fled Dili to seek refuge in nearby hills. Indonesian forces reportedly took over military and civil buildings in Dili early in the day.
