Massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake hits Japan; government warns of tsunami

Nuclear power plants and other facilities are being inspected for abnormalities. According to NHK, there has been no change in the readings of monitoring stations measuring radiation levels around the nuclear plants located in the cities where the tremor was felt. Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, with a tremor occurring at least every five minutes. Situated on the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and oceanic trenches that partially encircles the Pacific Basin, the country accounts for about 20% of earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher globally.
