The Rio de Janeiro State Assembly (Alerj) decided on Monday (8) to revoke the arrest of House President Rodrigo Bacellar (União Brasil). There were 42 ‘yes’ votes to revoke Bacellar’s arrest, and 21 ‘no’ votes to keep it. 65 deputies were present, three were absent, and one was on leave. There were two abstentions.
Bacellar was arrested on December 3 by the Federal Police in Operation Unha e Carne. According to the police, Bacellar is suspected of leaking confidential information from Operation Zargun, launched in September, which led to the arrest of former state deputy TH Joias. The warrant was issued by Minister Alexandre de Moraes from the Supreme Federal Court (STF), who also ordered his removal from the presidency of Alerj.
All present deputies from União Brasil, Bacellar’s party, voted ‘yes’ to revoke the arrest. Following União’s votes, all present deputies from PP (4 votes), Solidariedade (4 votes), Republicanos (3 votes), PRB, Podemos, PMN, PMB, PDT, Avante, and Agir (each with 1 vote) voted for revocation.
PL had 14 ‘yes’ votes and 3 ‘no’ votes; PT had 5 ‘no’ votes and 1 ‘yes’ vote; PSD had 3 ‘no’ votes and 2 ‘yes’ votes. All present deputies from PSOL (5 votes), PSB (2 votes), and PCdoB (2 votes) voted ‘no’. The two abstentions were from Delegado Carlos Augusto (PL) and Rafael Picciani (MDB).
The five absent deputies were: Dioniso Lins (PP), on medical leave, Felipe Soares (União Brasil), Cláudio Caiado (PSD), Vinicius Cozzolino (União Brasil), and Rodrigo Bacellar, who is in custody.
