Trump calls for presidential elections in Ukraine

It’s time to hold presidential elections in Ukraine, said US President Donald Trump in an interview with Politico. Trump noted that Ukraine ‘has not been doing particularly well’ lately and deemed the moment important for the elections. Trump expressed the opinion that the absence of elections goes against democratic principles. ‘You talk about democracy, but it reaches a point where it’s no longer democracy,’ concluded the US president, noting that elections in Ukraine have not been held ‘for a very long time’. The American president stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ‘using the conflict’ to avoid holding elections, but ‘the Ukrainian people should have the right to choose’. He also acknowledged that Zelensky may win the elections but emphasized that the results are unknown.
