Seattle’s Pride Match at World Cup Sparks Controversy with Iran and Egypt

Long before the World Cup draw last week, a Pride Match was designated to celebrate LGBTQ communities. The game in Seattle on June 26 will feature rainbow banners, flags, and art to represent Washington State’s LGBTQ community. SeattleFWC26, the organizing committee for the city’s World Cup participation, sees this as a unique opportunity to showcase LGBTQIA+ communities. However, the luck of the draw chose Iran and Egypt to play the Pride Match, countries with strict anti-LGBTQ laws. Both football associations have objected to the Pride association, requesting FIFA to cancel all related events and focus solely on the game. Egypt’s football association expressed that the Pride Match events conflict with the region’s cultural and religious values, while Iran protested the designation to FIFA, refusing to show any support for Pride.
