Police investigate whether women drugged and robbed British tourists of R$ 116,000 with ‘Goodnight Cinderella’ scam

The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police are investigating whether three women were involved in a scam known as ‘Goodnight Cinderella’ against two British tourists. The victims reportedly met the women in Lapa, downtown Rio, and were drugged before having their phones stolen, resulting in a loss of R$ 116,000. Images circulating on social media show one of the tourists falling unconscious at Ipanema Beach, South Zone of Rio. He gets out of a taxi and stumbles along the boardwalk before collapsing on the sand. A witness managed to capture footage of the three women suspected of the scam fleeing the scene in a taxi.

During their statements to the Tourist Support Specialized Police Station (DEAT), the victims revealed that they had met the women at a samba gathering in Lapa and later went to bars in the South Zone of Rio. In Ipanema, one of the men said he received a caipirinha from one of the suspects and lost consciousness after drinking it. Subsequently, he claimed that over 16,000 pounds (R$ 116,000 at the current exchange rate) were transferred from his bank accounts. The men were rescued and taken to the Copacabana Emergency Care Unit, where they regained consciousness hours later.

‘This is a very serious crime, where they are drugged, and usually have their phones stolen, along with these bank transactions. We will now continue with the investigations,’ stated Patricia Alemany, the DEAT delegate. The victims identified the suspects as Amanda Couto Deloca, 23, Mayara Ketelyn Americo da Silva, 27, and Raiane Campos de Oliveira, 28.

Raiane has a criminal record and is under investigation by DEAT for similar scams. She had been sentenced to 6 years in semi-open prison for robbing a British tourist who claimed to have been drugged and robbed by two women he met at a samba gathering at Pedra do Sal in 2023. However, Raiane was acquitted by the 8th Criminal Chamber last month. The judges ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove she was one of the robbers.
