The suspect in the killing of street sweeper Laudemir de Souza Fernandes, 44, in Vista Alegre neighborhood, West Region of Belo Horizonte, on Monday morning (8/11) was identified as the husband of a Minas Gerais Civil Police (PCMG) delegate. Laudemir de Souza Fernandes, 44, was shot in the abdomen. The crime took place on Modestina de Souza Street at around 8 a.m. Witnesses reported that the victim and his colleagues were collecting garbage when the truck driver, a 42-year-old woman, stopped and pulled over so that a car, a BYD model, could pass.
At that moment, the man allegedly rolled down the window and yelled at the driver that if anyone touched his vehicle, he would kill them. After the threats, the street sweepers, including Laudemir, asked the suspect to calm down and advised him to continue on his way. Nevertheless, the man, according to the witnesses, got out of the car agitated and shot at one of them. The gun allegedly belonged to his wife, who is a civil police delegate.
Laudemir was assisted by bystanders. He was taken to Santa Rita Hospital in Jardim Industrial neighborhood, Contagem, in the metropolitan area, but succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement released around 6:20 p.m., Minas Gerais Civil Police (PCMG) informed that they are awaiting the completion of the police report by PMMG to initiate the investigative process. The news outlet inquired if the suspect has a gun license, but received no response.
Mourning
In a statement, the Belo Horizonte City Hall, through the Urban Cleaning Superintendence (SLU), expressed regret over Laudemir’s death. The authority stated that the victim was hired by an outsourced cleaning services company, which is offering full support to the family and the other workers on the team who were threatened by the suspect. It was emphasized that the causes of death will be investigated by the security agencies.
Via social media, the Localix Environmental Services S.A. stated that the employee’s homicide was an ‘unjustifiable violence.’ ‘We are providing all necessary support to Laudemir’s family in this moment of grief and extend our sincerest condolences and solidarity to all colleagues.’
