The Role of Opera Directors: From Behind the Scenes Coordination to Artistic Core

In the long development of Chinese opera, the appellation ‘director’ may have appeared late, but its function has always existed, hidden in the literati who write plays, the scholars who speak them, and the seasoned actors, intertwined with other roles. This is similar to the situation in Western drama before the 19th century, where there were no full-time directors, and rehearsal affairs were mostly handled by playwrights or veteran actors. It is evident that the emergence of the director’s role in both Chinese and Western contexts is the inevitable outcome of artistic integration. The establishment of the Chinese modern opera director system is not simply transplanting foreign cultures, but a product of the collision and integration of traditional opera reforms and the introduction of Western dramatic theories. It has undergone a long evolution from spontaneous exploration to systematic norms, eventually forming a director system with national characteristics.
