Lula calls Brics summit to respond to US tariffs

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced on Wednesday (8/13) that the leaders of Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) will hold a videoconference to discuss a joint response to the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States against Steel and aluminum.

“We will not retaliate directly against the US, but we will seek to strengthen our commercial ties with other countries,” Lula said during a press conference.

The Brazilian president stressed the importance of solidarity among the Brics nations to counteract protectionist measures taken by some countries, especially the US.

Lula also highlighted that the summit aims to show that the Brics countries can effectively face challenges in the global economy by working together.

“We need to unite and show that we are capable of finding solutions collectively,” Lula added.

The meeting is scheduled to address strategies for increasing trade between the Brics members and strengthening their economic partnership to mitigate the impacts of the US tariffs.

The summit will also serve as a platform for discussing ways to promote sustainable development and address common challenges faced by the Brics countries in the international arena.
