The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has taken a significant step by announcing the expansion of wastewater surveillance to detect 10 viruses in 50 cities within the next six months. This initiative aims to improve early detection of disease outbreaks. At present, five cities are undergoing monitoring as part of this surveillance program. The primary objective of this expansion is to promptly identify any surge in viral infections in different parts of the country. By analyzing wastewater samples, health authorities can gain crucial insights into the prevalence and spread of various viruses, enabling them to take proactive measures to mitigate potential outbreaks.
