UI Apologizes for Inviting Peter Berkowitz, Stanford Pro-Israel Academic

University of Indonesia (UI) has issued an apology for the presence of Professor Peter Berkowitz as the keynote speaker at the University Academic System Introduction event for UI’s Postgraduate program at Balairung UI Depok on Saturday (8/23/2025). The apology came after widespread criticism and controversy surrounding Berkowitz’s pro-Israel stance. The university admitted to being less diligent in examining the background of the speaker.

UI’s spokesperson, Maria Indriyani, stated, “We deeply regret the oversight in vetting Prof Peter Berkowitz, and we apologize for any distress this may have caused to members of our community.” Berkowitz’s speech, which focused on geopolitical issues in the Middle East, sparked outrage among some students and faculty members who questioned his impartiality and academic integrity.

Following the apology, several student groups called for a reevaluation of the university’s guest selection process to ensure speakers align with UI’s values and principles. The incident also prompted discussions on academic freedom and the importance of diverse perspectives in academic discourse.

Despite the controversy, Professor Berkowitz defended his presentation, arguing that academic freedom should allow for differing viewpoints to be heard and debated in a scholarly setting. Berkowitz expressed disappointment at the backlash but emphasized the necessity of open dialogue and intellectual exchange in a university setting.

In response to the criticism, UI affirmed its commitment to upholding academic freedom while also recognizing the need for careful consideration in selecting speakers to ensure a balanced and inclusive exchange of ideas. The university pledged to review its procedures for inviting guest speakers to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The apology from UI marked a significant moment in the ongoing debate over academic freedom and the responsibilities of universities in promoting a diverse and inclusive intellectual environment. The incident served as a catalyst for reflection and dialogue on how best to navigate sensitive and controversial topics within the academic community.
