Approximately 37 Out of 1817 Temples and Gurudwaras in Pakistan are Currently Active

In Pakistan, religious sites of minorities have been increasingly targeted by extremists and terrorists, with temples, gurudwaras, and other places of worship becoming symbols of attack. Only 37 out of a total of 1817 Hindu temples and Gurudwaras are currently active, where religious activities take place, as reported by a parliamentary committee. The situation has led to a decline in the number of active temples and other religious sites, while many have faced destruction.

Pakistan’s Parliamentary Committee on Minorities has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of historic temples and gurudwaras in the country. Reporting that out of 1817 Hindu temples and Gurudwaras existing in 1947, only 37 remain active today. The committee highlighted the ongoing decrease in the population of Hindus and Sikhs in the country, stressing the urgent need for constitutional and legal reforms.

During the committee’s session, Senator Danish Kumar emphasized the importance of protecting temples and gurudwaras for minorities. The constitutional rights of religious minorities in Pakistan have been violated, denying them justice and equality. Dr. Ramesh Kumar, a member of the committee, expressed the necessity of restoring and maintaining the historic properties of temples and gurudwaras, emphasizing the need for non-Muslims to hold leadership positions.

The majority of these religious sites have been left in a deteriorating state following neglect and attacks on minorities. It is essential to address these issues promptly to preserve the religious diversity and heritage in Pakistan, ensuring the protection of all minority communities. Efforts must be made to safeguard and restore these sacred places, promoting tolerance and coexistence among different religious groups.
