Around 150 people from 21 countries will gather from December 1st to 4th in Rio de Janeiro to increase the participation of civil society from the Global South in global governance. The event, taking place at Armazém da Utopia in the city center, is seen as historical by organizers as the first activity of the People’s Civil Council of Brics. Also, it is the last major event under Brazil’s presidency within the bloc.
Rio de Janeiro will host the Brics People’s Summit, a space for debates and advocacy bringing together popular movements and civil society to ensure a permanent communication channel with the official bloc, as informed by the MST (Landless Workers Movement) in a statement.
Discussions will focus on several key areas, as stated by the MST: economic cooperation, multipolarity construction, global geopolitics reconfiguration, and de-dollarization. The event will also gather various authorities, including Brazilian Brics sherpa Ambassador Maurício Carvalho Lyrio and Antônio Freitas, Deputy Secretary of International Finance and Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Finance, a key representative of the country in financial and economic negotiations within Brics and G20.
Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank (NDB) and former President of Brazil, will participate virtually in the activity. The People’s Civil Council of Brics was established and recognized during the Leaders’ Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024.
