Born in 1945, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) celebrates his 80th birthday and is now the first octogenarian president of Brazil. During a visit to Indonesia last Thursday (23), the former leader celebrated his birthday in advance with a dinner at the Merdeka Presidential Palace in Jakarta. On this occasion, he also confirmed his intention to run for a fourth term in 2026. Former President Michel Temer (MDB) left office at the age of 78, while other Brazilian presidents who completed their terms over the age of 70 include Getúlio Vargas (72), Ernesto Geisel (71), and Fernando Henrique Cardoso (71).
“I want to tell you that I will be turning 80, but I can assure you that I have the same energy I had when I was 30 years old. And I will run for a fourth term in Brazil,” Lula stated last Thursday. If reelected next year, Lula will be sworn in for his fourth term at the age of 81. “So, I’m telling you this because we will meet many more times. My term only ends in 2026, by the end of the year. But I am prepared to run for other elections and try to strengthen the valuable relationship between Indonesia and Brazil, attracting more Brazilian entrepreneurs to visit Indonesia,” the Brazilian president added.
