Gustavo Gómez was involved in a controversial incident early in the match between Palmeiras and Cruzeiro on Sunday, for the 30th round of the Brasileirão. With 11 minutes played, the Paraguayan defender made a strong tackle on Wanderson, who was injured in the process and had to be substituted due to shin pain. Referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein was immediately called to the VAR monitor for a possible expulsion. However, after reviewing the play for a few minutes, he only showed a yellow card to the Palmeiras defender. According to Carlos Simon, an ESPN refereeing commentator, the referee made a mistake by not sending off Gómez for the challenge.
