China Announces Specific Emission Reduction Targets for the First Time, Analysis Indicates Below Expectations

Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the UN Climate Change Summit via video on Wednesday, September 24, revealing China’s climate goals for 2035. Xi stated that the net greenhouse gas emissions would decrease by 7% to 10% below peak levels. Additionally, the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption is set to exceed 30% of total energy consumption, and the total installed capacity of wind and solar power will increase sixfold compared to 2020.
